BOULDEROSA

Lat. 43° 12' 45" Long. 1° 01' 30"

The entrance is by way of mined passage opposite the White House. 50m past the spiral staircase a south-easterly passage leads for 60m to a small hole in its right hand wall.

The 30m entrance pitch is freehanging for 18m to a 2m wide ledge from which a bolt gives another freehang to the bottom of the pitch. The chamber is about 3m wide and is littered with wood from the mine above.

The southernmost exit soon becomes rubble choked, whereas the passage from the other side of the chamber winds for 8m to the top of the 58m pitch. With a tight take off this pitch is split by four bolts to give abrasion free hangs past numerous ledges and boulders in the rift.

The pitch ends on a lOm ledge which is strewn with rubble. The southerly exit is very loose and dangerous and is thought to reconnect with the bottom rifts 60m below.

The continuation of the rift gives a 58m pitch directly from the lOm ledge. Once again 3 bolts give a freehang in an impressive shaft.

At the bottom of the pitch is a big boulder, precariously perched in the rift that rocks when stood upon. To the north an active inlet enters a lOm wide chamber and the water sinks through the boulder floor.

Traversing over the boulder a 5m climb down leads to a 60m long, tortuously winding rift which can be traversed at several levels to the top of the fourth pitch.

A tight takeoff is shortly followed by a second bolt in an awkward inlet before the grandeur of the 40m freehanging pitch is seen. The pitch ends in a lOm wide chamber. The rift continues from the southern end of the chamber and like the previous rift is a winding awkward passage for SOm to a small chamber. The chamber has an active inlet and the water continues along the rift floor.

The exit from the chamber can be at various levels and is as before. The rift ends in a 15m wet Ditch which is broken by a ledge after 5m. This lands in a streamway, with water from the last two inlets, about l5cm deep. Low, stooping passage leads to a duck which can be traversed above along a 45 degree ramp.
